This photo shows how the pews were attached
to the central partition. Wooden cleats were nailed under the seat then
screwed to the partition. Later, as the seats began to loosen and separate
from the partition, wire nails were toenailed though the seat and backboards
into the partition.
Note the cut out section in the seats support board. We believe that it
was notched to accommodate a steam pipe to head the congregations feet.
These cut outs weakened the supports and consequently many cracked causing
further damage. |
